After running her own extremely successful global computer hardware and software services company, Zimbabwe-born Rumbi Serima-Fowler, 48, moved to the UK and found herself a part-time office manager role so that she could focus on raising her two young sons. An industrious woman, Rumbi also managed to fit in studying towards her law degree.
In Rumbi’s personal life, one of her sons had started showing signs of discomfort after any food or milk intake, and would cry constantly. Rumbi was determined to find out the cause of what her son was experiencing. She decided to take her sons abroad to her Mother as she was exhausted and desperate for help. Soon after their arrival her son’s discomfort and problems with digestion and allergies seemed to disappear but upon their return to the UK her son’s symptoms returned almost immediately. Her passion for natural and organic remedies was awoken when her son was diagnosed with autism.
Plenty of research led Rumbi to the realisation of how almost all of the chemicals and additives within various consumer products seemed to have a negative effect on her son. She switched to an organic and free from gluten and casein diet and found her son’s behaviour, allergies, food intolerances, eczema and tummy problems dramatically improve. However, during these changes Rumbi noticed that the quality and nature of skincare products for treating her son’s eczema did not always lead to a positive experience – so she set out to make her own!
After attending some day training courses in London, Rumbi soon realised that these had not equipped her with the knowledge and confidence to formulate her own products. Whilst searching for further courses she came across www.formulabotanica.com and spent the next two years retraining to gain cosmetology qualifications with Formula Botanica.
Rumbi says about her experience “I learnt everything needed to successfully run my own business – from natural skincare and anti-wrinkle/skin rejuvenation products, through to Organic Skincare Business skills from Star Khechara and Lorraine Dallmeier, and I became a Formula Botanica Licensed Skincare Tutor in the process too.”
What started out as a quest to find a skincare solution for her son, ignited a passion in Rumbi, and she became fascinated with the properties and benefits of plants and ingredients used in natural and organic skincare. Rumbi then began to make her very own personal skincare products which she had found exciting and of great satisfaction!
Although still studying for her Law Degree, Rumbi saw this as a great opportunity to be able to make a difference and educate others of the effects of chemicals and other toxins within beauty products and their adverse effects. Weighed against the fact that working full time would take her away from her son when needed care and attention made it an easy decision for Rumbi.
The three main obstacles Rumbi cites as having to overcome in launching her business are:
Time – “Trying to study and work at the same time is difficult enough at any level. Add two boys under 7 to the mix and you have quite a feat on your hands. Those I would say are challenges which every working mum has to face if they want to accomplish their goals.”
Finances – “Growing has had to have been organic because the financial implications of bringing just one product to market are massive for an Indie brand; and to make sense you need to be able to offer more that just one product.”
Multitasking – “Perhaps the biggest challenge is having to learn numerous vital tasks required to run a successful business.”
The benefits far outweigh the obstacles, and Rumbi’s three favourite things about her new career path are:
Time – “Flexibility to look after my family.”
Multitasking – “To be able to put into practice all the skills I have picked up along the way and apply my education. The variety of roles that I play as a self-employed business owner.”
Educating – “Educating people and sharing my knowledge. Being able to make a real difference to people and the potential to do that.”
What would be your best tip to someone thinking of starting out? – “Follow your heart, pick your niche, do the maths, make sure you have and maintain good standards, be honest and strive for a good working relationship with EVERYONE you meet along the way . In the words of Bishop T.D. Jakes ‘A name can either open or close doors you’!”
